The twenty-second step of Robert Walzer.
“27 Steps of Walser” is a series of unsaved video streams dedicated to the walking drifts undertaken by poet Robert Walser, shown on DeriveTV. He died in Herisau where he spent his final years in a mental hospital, where his sister brought him. While in the asylum, Robert Walser continued taking his mad walks.
These days, when we don’t need to move our legs to walk, when all you need to start a journey is your fingers sliding on a touchpad and your eyes focused on a flickering screen. We will undertake 27 drifts, one for each year that Robert Walser spent in the asylum, from which he made his forays across the area on his own or in the company of his friend Carl Seelig, who would come to visit him regularly.
We will use the method of the “settled transition,” picking 27 videos that YouTube returns to “Herisau” search query (which features landscape views of Herisau and some unrelated things too). Then we will re-edit them by applying the special editing scheme, “The Walk.” Thus, all the footage will be processed by the same mixing algorithm, and the initial files will be affected. We will stream all 27 videos on DeriveTV, week by week.
These streams will not be saved, because every screening is as unique as each of Walser’s walks.
